touches the inner life

of places & things

As a trained art historian and passionate museum-goer, I find immense value in visual tradition and in historical languages of art.  For centuries, artists have used drawing as a means of investigating and responding to their own environment as well as to the work of other artists, learning their craft by visually retracing their predecessors' footsteps in ink or chalk on paper.  Like them, I want to search for the essence of things in their historical roots and ground my artistic practice in the time-honored discipline of drawing from life - not merely for love of tradition, but also and especially because for us today, as for the artists of the past, drawing is the key that unlocks the ability to truly see the things around us and touch their inner life.
